The drive to the supporters point definitely requires a 4×4 so thankfully we could use Warrick’s Jeep Wrangler. There are a few spots near the Farmhouse with signal but in general there is no reception so this makes it difficult to know whereabouts your runners is along the course.Īt race briefing the night before, we were informed that there would be a convoy of cars making their way to the supporters point on-route at around 7am however, Alex (whose boyfriend Gary was racing in my place) and I only left around 7.30am to drive to the supporters point which in hindsight was too late. TRACKING YOUR RUNNER IS A CHALLENGE – NO CELLPHONE CONNECTIONĪlthough it is a good thing in some ways, there is very limited cellphone reception at Moolmanshoek which makes it very difficult to track your runner(s) if you are at the Main Lodge. ![]() I would recommend that you make friends with fellow supporters, bring some cash to buy coffee or hot chocolate as well as some breakfast snacks to keep you going as there is not much you can do other than wait around until you can start making your way to the supporters point on-route. As soon as the race starts and all the runners make their way across the fields to the first mountain summit called Sikonyela’s Hat, there is a weird feeling of emptiness left behind at the Main Lodge although there are other supporters around the vibe is not the same. I must say I had serious FOMO (fear of missing out) at this point. MAKE FRIENDS, DRINK COFFEE AND BE PATIENTĪt the starting point, there is a buzz in the air from the music to the nerves and conversations of the runners about to take on this mountain challenge. ![]() The race starts at 6am at the Main Lodge but the runners all need to collect their tracking devices beforehand so it is recommended that you get there by 5am. It is an early start for not only the runners but the supporters too. For the first time ever the event organisers, Pure Adventures, decided to do the route in reverse.Īs mentioned in my recent blog post about Moolmanshoek, I was unable to participate in the 4peaks challenge due to my broken pinky however, I was able to support my husband along the way so here are some tips I have for future supporters of this race having had first-hand experience of being on the side-lines. ![]() Participants have to summit the 4peaks along the mountain ridge of the Witteberg Mountain range in a circular route. The race is a self-supported and self-navigational route which takes place at the picturesque Moolmanshoek Private Game Reserve (read more about this venue in my recent blog post). On the 26 th September 2015, the 4peaks challenge took place which is known as arguably the toughest 24km in South Africa with a vertical accent of over 1800m.
